When you are going to camp, you will also want to participate in occasional educational activities. Most of the time that you spend at camp is designed for outdoor activities such as hiking. On a rainy day, however, your counselors should have something fun for you to do inside. Here are some of the crafts that you will enjoy making at camp on a rainy day.
Educational Activities: Have Fun Making Crafts at Camp
1: Paint Rocks to Use as Bookshelf Decorations
While camping, you might go on a hike into an area where there are ancient rock paintings. A rainy day is the perfect time for you to create your own rock art. You can use rocks of different sizes for this project. You will need acrylic paint along with a waterproof sealant to protect your artwork.
Cover the tables with newspapers before beginning. Gather an assortment of paintbrushes along with small containers of water for cleaning them when done. You might want to have tiny magnets for the small rocks to place the items on a kitchen’s refrigerator. Use your imagination to create a design.
Larger painted rocks look nice on a bookshelf inside your home or along a garden’s path outside. This craft is educational because you can learn more about the ancient people who decorated the rocky cliffs and caves in your area.
2: Make a Bird Feeder from a Large Plastic Bottle
While hiking, you will notice a lot of interesting birds in the area. Learning more about birds is one of the most important educational activities at camp. You can continue to watch cardinals or blue jays by making a bird feeder. Keep large plastic water bottles for this activity.
You can collect long wooden sticks. They will provide a place for a bird to land before it begins feasting on delicious birdseeds. To insert the stick, you will cut a small hole in each side of the plastic bottle toward its bottom. Use caution while cutting the holes, and make sure they are slightly larger than the wooden stick.
Pour birdseed into the plastic bottle through its top opening before screwing on the lid. Twist thin wire on the top of the bottle directly underneath the lid to suspend it in a tree at camp. Or you can take it home to feed the local birds in your yard.
